A man has died after he was allegedly shot by Nigeria Customs officials while transporting bags of rice to Sokoto state.
According to reports, the driver was conveying bags of rice from Niger Republic to Sokoto state where he met Customs agents on duty at a checkpoint..
It was gathered the man was stopped by the officers – with him reportedly refusing to follow them to their station.
This allegedly made one of the Customs men shoot the driver in the forehead as he died instantly.
On seeing what had happened, the officials fled the scene moments later.
Meanwhile, in January, a trigger-happy customs officer had chased another rice smuggler to Abule Egba, one early morning before shooting him dead and running away.
The body of the deceased was seen lying on the ground shortly after the incident while bags of rice that were smuggled were seen inside the danfo bus, with registration number Lagos/RKY/1953506.
Stains of blood were seen on the body of the bus and some bags of rice as well. Irate youths burnt tyres and blocked the express road in a protest over the killing.
Officials of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS and task-force officials were however quickly drafted to the area to quell the riot while Armoured Personnel Carrier, APC was also deployed.
Eventually, the road was opened for motorists to pass. Read here for images of that incident.
